Electronic, coded transponder imobiliser chips, embedded in the plastic body of the key were introduced from 1995. The chip is passive, so it doesn't need a battery, the code is read when you turn the key in the ignition, it is not necessary for the user to press a button, the process is fully automatic.
Most motor car owners don't even realisze that their car is fitted with this technology
The car makers and main dealerships keep most of the technology for reproducing keys a closly guarded secret.
